Each city presents its own challenges to the people living within, and the same can be said about having children. Each child is different, presenting his or her own challenges to you, the mom. If you've recently moved from a horse farm in London, Ontario it can be a bit of a culture shock, for both you and your kids, to be suddenly dumped into the middle of one of the biggest cities on the East Coast. Not to worry, though. I've been a Boston mom for many years now (no, I won't tell you how many!) and I know all the ins and outs. Through this website, I'll share them with you.
If you listen to the tourism blurbs, Boston is one of the most livable cities in the United States. As long as that means it's got lots of things to buy and you and your kids can walk down the street (most of the time) without being worried about your safety, then I would say it's true. Where this statement gets a bit dicey is when you start trying to afford it. Unless you've won a massive amount of money in a car sweepstakes contest, you and your significant other are probably both going to have to work unless you want to find yourself living in a two bedroom apartment on the dodgy side of town, because the properties here are expensive!

You might think this is a pretty good argument in favor of NOT moving your family to Boston, but the crazy thing is that it's totally worth it. First of all, there are the schools. There are like 100 colleges and universities in the city, which means lots of field trips and hockey camps for the kids, plus improve your chances of them going to college close to home. The public schools are ranked among the best in the country - over 80% of the kids graduate. And if you don't want to send your kid to public school, there's are plenty of private schools too. Some of them will even teach your kid Latin!
Once your kid becomes an intellectual (which will happen fast, let me tell you, like, before they're out of cloth diapers) you'll have plenty of educational museums and historic sites to take them to because Boston is filled with them. There's a ballet here, a symphony orchestra, a fine arts museum, and a children's museum, just to name a few, and plenty of historic plaques and buildings. Once you've been here you can never go back, really. There no place else that's quite the same.
Of course, there's a lot more to being a mom in Boston than school and going to museums (though sometimes it feels like there isn't!). You'll probably also want to know about the hospitals and the shopping malls and the job prospects for moms and whether your kid is going to develop that Boston accent (yes). I'll tell you about all that, too. Hopefully my tales of trying to buy and install vanity cabinets in a 100 year old town house, attempting to balance PTA and work, and learning (the hard way) which streets are not okay to walk down alone after dark will help you make your adjustment.
